There is a growing recognition in Australia of the importance of “Birthing on Country” for Aboriginal women; that is, birthing in or close to ones home community. Some fabulous research has been done by a team led by Aboriginal women and Sue Kildea to assist non-Aboriginal health professionals to work more effectively with communities. The work is based on the recognition that the health beliefs of many remote communities have strong cultural systems that inform appropriate care and necessitate an understanding of context for health professionals offering the care.
