G’Day! We are currently spending 5 weeks in Lismore, Australia working with the University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) on collaborative research to improve health care in Canada and Australia. One of our projects together is the adaptation of the Canadian Rural Birth Index (RBI) to Australia. The RBI is a health services planning tool to measure population need for local intrapartum maternity services that we developed in Canada. It has been integrated into the Australian National Maternity Action Plan for application across Australia. Leading the research is our colleague and director of the UCRH,  Dr Lesley Barclay. Aside from validating the model, we are gaining insights into system organization in Australia that may be valuable to Canadian rural health service planning.
